Recycling Technical Assistance

1997 – 2009

Client Needs

Encouraging reuse, recycling, and composting activities are a priority for the City of Newark.  To support these goals, the City chose to retain consultant expertise to assist the City, businesses, and multi-family customers with recycling technical assistance.

HF&H Solution

HF&H has been providing technical assistance to the City of Newark since 1997.  We prepare the City's Annual AB 939 report; promote increased diversion of multi-family and commercial recyclables; facilitate construction and demolition recycling; assist with recycling at large events; and, serve as a liaison to Alameda County Waste Management Authority Technical Advisory Committee.  In 2005 and 2006, we also monitored the WMAC’s implementation of residential food waste collection and performed visual inspection of residents' carts to estimate participation levels in the food waste collection program.

Results

  • Newark’s AB 939 diversion level is over 60%;
  • Reported diversion from construction/demolition projects is over 50%; and,
  • Comprehensive recycling for participants and vendors at the annual Newark Days Festival.
